Seals for Outdoor Applications: Critical Issues in Special-Purpose Vehicles and Agricultural Machinery

Seals used in special-purpose vehicles and agricultural machinery often operate under conditions that are very different from those of equipment installed in a controlled environment. Outdoor temperature, water, mud, dust, UV radiation, ozone, oils, fuels, vibrations and variable operating cycles can act simultaneously on the component and alter its behaviour over time.


In these applications, the seal must not only prevent fluid leakage. In many cases, it must also protect the system from the ingress of external contaminants, continue to operate after periods of inactivity and maintain sufficiently stable performance during significant changes in environmental conditions.


For this reason, selecting a seal for an outdoor application means evaluating the component within the vehicle or machine in which it will be installed. Material, geometry, movement, pressure, environmental exposure and maintenance must all be considered together.


Agricultural Machinery

What changes when a seal operates outdoors

In an outdoor application, operating conditions are not necessarily constant.

A machine may operate at low temperatures in the morning, heat up after several hours of use and then remain stationary outdoors. It may be exposed to rain, washing, accumulated soil or dust and, at the same time, come into contact with hydraulic oils, lubricants or fuels.


The main critical issue is the combination of these factors.


A material that is compatible with the internal fluid may not be equally suitable for environmental exposure. Conversely, an elastomer with good resistance to ozone and weathering may have limitations when exposed to certain oils or fuels.


The assessment must therefore consider both what happens inside the system and the environment to which the seal is exposed from the outside.


Temperature fluctuations and thermal cycles

The maximum rated temperature of a material is only one of the elements that should be considered.


In outdoor operating equipment, temperature fluctuations can be particularly important. A seal may move from very low ambient temperatures to considerably higher conditions during machine operation.


At low temperatures, some elastomers progressively become less flexible. Their ability to adapt to surfaces may therefore decrease, particularly in the presence of movement or dimensional variations.


At high temperatures, material ageing processes increase and may affect hardness, elasticity, compression set and service life.


In addition, the metal components forming the groove expand and contract. Different materials may change dimension at different rates as temperature varies, affecting the actual compression applied to the seal.


For this reason, evaluating only the maximum achievable temperature does not provide a complete description of the application.


UV radiation, ozone and atmospheric ageing

Elastomeric surfaces directly exposed to the environment may also be affected by ultraviolet radiation and ozone.


Sensitivity varies significantly depending on the elastomer family and the specific compound. In materials with limited resistance to weathering, prolonged exposure may contribute to hardening, loss of elasticity or surface cracking.


This phenomenon becomes more important when the component remains outdoors for years or is installed in a directly exposed position.


However, not all seals installed on agricultural machinery or special-purpose vehicles are exposed to the same degree. An O-Ring completely enclosed inside a circuit has different requirements from a profile, protective element or seal that is directly exposed to the external environment.


The position of the component must therefore be considered during material selection.


Dust, soil and mud: protection from the outside as well

In special-purpose vehicles and, in particular, agricultural machinery, external contamination is one of the most characteristic operating conditions.


Fine dust, sand, soil, mud and debris can reach rods, shafts, joints and moving components. If these contaminants pass through the external protection system, they may reach sliding surfaces or the internal circuit.


The issue is therefore not limited to fluid leakage.


The sealing system often has to perform a dual function: keeping the fluid inside while limiting the ingress of contaminants from the outside.


In dynamic systems, this aspect becomes particularly important. Abrasive particles deposited on surfaces can increase seal wear, damage sliding areas and progressively compromise sealing performance.


For this reason, wipers, primary seals, guiding elements and surface conditions must be evaluated as parts of a complete system rather than as independent components.


Water, moisture and washing

Outdoor use also exposes components to water and moisture.

Rain, condensation, standing water, periodic washing and jets used to remove soil or debris can reach areas of the machine where static or dynamic seals are installed.

Once again, it is necessary to distinguish between occasional exposure and frequent or prolonged contact.


The issue is not limited to the material’s compatibility with water. It is also necessary to evaluate the possibility that water and contaminants may reach metal surfaces, lubricants or areas where moisture could alter the intended operating conditions.

System geometry, seal orientation and protection from the surrounding environment can therefore be just as important as elastomer selection.


Hydraulic oils, greases and fuels

External environmental conditions are only one part of the problem.

Agricultural machinery and special-purpose vehicles frequently use hydraulic circuits, lubricants, greases and fuels. Seals must therefore maintain suitable characteristics even when exposed to these fluids.


Insufficient compatibility can cause swelling, shrinkage, changes in hardness or loss of mechanical properties.


Material selection must therefore consider chemical compatibility and environmental resistance at the same time.


This is one of the reasons why there is no elastomer that is universally suitable for outdoor applications.


NBR, HNBR, EPDM, FKM, polyurethanes and other material families have different characteristics. Even within the same family, different compounds may offer different performance depending on formulation.


Selection must begin with the complete operating profile of the application.


Vibrations, impacts and mechanical stress

A mobile vehicle does not operate under the same conditions as a static system installed on a fixed structure.


Uneven terrain, transfers, acceleration, vibrations, impacts and load variations may generate stresses that are also transferred to grooves and sealing components.

In some applications, micro-movements may occur between surfaces that are nominally expected to remain stationary. In others, misalignment, clearance or deformation under load may temporarily alter the geometry available to the seal.


A seal that is correctly sized based only on static conditions may therefore experience problems if the actual system includes movements or deformations that were not considered during selection.


Tolerances, seal support, material hardness and groove stability become particularly important when the machine is subjected to intensive use.


Critical issues in agricultural machinery

Tractors, combine harvesters, soil-working equipment and other agricultural machines operate under a particularly complex combination of conditions.


Work may take place in the presence of large quantities of dust or mud, changing weather conditions and high loads. Hydraulic systems may be subjected to repeated cycles, while equipment may remain unused for significant periods between seasons.

This last aspect should not be underestimated.


A seal may need to maintain its characteristics even after prolonged periods of inactivity. During storage, temperature, humidity, environmental exposure, permanent deformation and interaction with any fluids remaining in the system may still be relevant.


Restarting the machine after a period of inactivity may therefore represent a different operating condition from continuous use.

The category of special-purpose vehicles includes a wide range of very different applications.


Vehicles for winter operations, working vehicles, off-highway machinery and systems designed for specific technical environments may be intended to operate where a conventional vehicle would not normally be used.


This variety makes it difficult to define universally applicable requirements.

A vehicle used in mountainous environments may require particular attention to low temperatures and freeze-thaw cycles. A vehicle operating in dusty environments will have different priorities. An application subjected to intensive use may instead require particular attention to stability under repeated loads, vibrations and long operating cycles.


In these cases, the general definition of “outdoor use” is not sufficient.


It is necessary to understand where, how and for how long the vehicle or machine will operate.


Critical issues in special-purpose vehicles

Material and geometry must be evaluated together

Even in outdoor applications, attributing every problem to the material can lead to an incomplete diagnosis.


A suitable compound cannot always compensate for an incorrect groove, insufficient compression, a damaged surface or a configuration that cannot prevent contaminant ingress.


Likewise, correctly designed geometry may not be sufficient if the material loses elasticity at the expected temperatures or is incompatible with the fluids involved.


Performance depends on the interaction between several elements:

material, groove geometry, type of movement, pressure, temperature, fluids, external contamination, surfaces and expected service life.


It is this combination that determines seal behaviour over time.


When an outdoor seal shows recurring problems

Leakage or premature wear does not automatically indicate the root cause.

However, certain signs can help guide the analysis.


If the problem appears mainly during the cold season, the material’s low-temperature behaviour should be checked. If the seal shows wear together with the presence of soil or dust, the contaminant exclusion system should also be evaluated.


Cracking or hardening on directly exposed components may require further analysis of environmental ageing. Leakage occurring after long periods of inactivity may instead involve permanent deformation, material changes or conditions present during storage.


Simply replacing the component with an identical seal may temporarily restore functionality, but it does not necessarily eliminate the cause of the problem.


Selection must begin with the actual operating profile

To define a sealing solution for a special-purpose vehicle or agricultural machine, it is useful to reconstruct the operating profile as completely as possible.


It is not enough to know that the application operates “outdoors”.


Minimum and maximum temperatures, variations during the operating cycle, contact with water or mud, contamination levels, fluids, pressure, movement, frequency of use, periods of inactivity and required service life should all be considered.


Maintenance procedures may also play a role. Washing, lubrication, replacement intervals and storage conditions can alter the environment in which the component must maintain its function.


The more variable the operating context, the less effective it is to select a seal based on a single parameter.
